September 1st in Latvia: A Day to Prioritize Family

Just a few days ago, one of our clients asked us an important question: “Are employees in Latvia entitled to a day off on September 1st, the first day of school?” This question comes up often at this time of year, and it’s no surprise—September 1st is a very special occasion for families with school-aged children. The start of the school year brings excitement, pride, and new beginnings, and many parents want to be present for this milestone in their child’s life.

What Does Latvian Labour Law Say?

According to Latvian Labour Law, parents are entitled to supplementary paid leave:

  • Employees caring for one or two children under 14 years of age are entitled to at least one working day of additional paid leave each year.
  • Employees caring for three or more children under 16 years, or a child with a disability up to 18 years, are entitled to three working days of additional paid leave.

This right applies to each parent individually, even if both parents work for the same employer. To use this entitlement, employees simply need to provide a request and proof of parenthood.

It is important to note that the law does not tie these supplementary leave days to a specific date. Parents can choose when to use them—making September 1st an ideal time for many.

In some organizations, particularly state or municipal institutions, internal policies may grant an extra day off specifically on September 1st for parents of young schoolchildren. While this is not mandatory under the law, it is a practice some employers adopt to support their people.

Why Employers Should Encourage It

Recognizing an Important Milestone
Allowing parents to take time off on September 1st acknowledges how meaningful this day is for families.

Flexibility for Both Parents
Since each parent is entitled to their own supplementary leave, flexibility can help both share in their child’s experience.

Building a Supportive Culture
A small gesture—such as approving leave on September 1st—reinforces a caring and family-friendly workplace culture.

Supporting employees is more than just fulfilling a legal obligation—it’s about valuing people as parents, not only as professionals. By making it easier for them to be present on their child’s first day of school, employers strengthen loyalty, trust, and morale across the company.
